Tala is a technical word which usaully means a series of sound produced on a percussion instrument. Dundubhi, Mridangam, Khol, Pakhawaj and Tabla are some of the percussion instruments associated with the Indian music. These instruments are hollow structure covered | ||

by a processed animal skin. Currently, Tabla is the most popular and widely used accompanying instrument for vocal music, instrumental music and dance. The Tabla actully means a pair of drums. The smaller, higher pitched drum is singly called the 'Tabla'. It is also known as 'daya' means right handed. The larger base drum is called 'bayan'. The shell of 'tabla' or 'daya' is usually carved of resewood where as 'bayan' is made up of either brass or copper. The hollow structures are covered with two layers of goat skin and a distinctive spot made out of a black colored paste which is meant for tuning. |
